As far as the artwork is concerned, the visual style is great, not to mention colorful. There are a couple of basic sketches in there as well, but the actual backgrounds are very detailed, and so are the characters themselves. In the end, Butterfly Soup is clearly aimed at girls and boys in the same situation as the main characters, but everyone can have a blast playing the game.

Although Butterfly Soup's main plot is ostensibly about sports, beneath that surface it's a story about young women falling in love with each other. Below that, it's even more fundamentally a story about discovering and fighting for who you really are.

Like most visual novels, it doesn't offer a lot of gameplay options; you can make some important choices, but parts of the game just unfold without any real meaningful input. The visuals are simple but charming and characterful, with distinctive and well-realised characters against colourful backgrounds.

Butterfly Soup is a charming and compelling game that should definitely interest anyone who enjoys the visual novel genre. The dialogue is both genuinely affecting and, in places, hilarious.
