I started crying part way through because I realized I was the happiest I'd ever been in my entire life. In my eyes, the magic of cinema lies in its delicate relationship with hopes and dreamsand here my hopes and dreams became intertwined with those of the characters.
Just like with the Love Eterne, it's as though I'm seeing my dreams in these images, I'm seeing my dreams unfold before me. If The Love Eterne was my arrival at the top of a mountain in the clouds, then with The Lovers here I am surrounded by clouds and flowers, overcome with love, I have learned how to dance with the butterfliesI have learned how to dream with the butterflies.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. The Lovers starts as a typical, light-hearted guy, Shan-pak, who falls in love with a girl dressed as a guy, Ying-tai, at school. The atmosphere is endlessly enjoyable, the chemistry is otherworldly, and the lovers exist in their own universe. After 6 months, Ying-tai returns home to her arranged marriage despite any and all pleas of marrying Shan-pak.
The tenants of nature rebel against societal powers, and tears of blood lead to bursts of wind and torrents of rain. The universe sets straight elemental forces. Love conquers. Had me in tears for the greater part of the finale. It's a hint that not everyone is going to get what they hope for. Sprinkled throughout is wonderful imagery: A simple wedding gift covered in the dust raised by the retainers for a competing wedding party. A student holding a broken zither overhead as the day turns to night.
A monk relaxing on the shore of a koi pond, asking that the fish be set free. The VHS tape, however, might easily drive you mad.
The good news is that it's letterboxed so that you won't miss any of the gorgeous cinematography. And if you can read the subtitles -- well, the translation has its weaker points. For example, one of the schoolmasters plays a variant of Go while his students are taking their test. The subtitles translate the game as "chess. Overall, though, it's a wonderful film that is well worth seeing for the story, the performances, and the lessons to be learned. Details Edit. Release date August 13, Taiwan.

The two young lovers are able to forge a bond unlike any other, or so the film wants us to believe. When their love is tested, disbelief settles in and the film undergoes a most trying tonal shift.
When her parents the excellent Carrie Ng and the blustering Tsui Kam-Kong object to their relationship due to class issues, the two rebel.
